Q&A With Black Walnut Winery!
1.) Why did you choose Phoenixville?
We have been a part of the Phoenixville community for almost 20 years, and have watched firsthand its transformation to a destination location for food and wine (ok, beer and spirits too!). We wanted to contribute to the revitalization of this amazing town, and when the property at the corner of Gay and Bridge Streets became available, we knew that we were destined to be part of growth of this thriving community. We are thrilled to be ‘living our dream’ right here in Phoenixville.
2.) Why make wine?
OMG, why not!?! Wine is amazing….so many different flavors, bodies and aromas….and all of those flavors come directly from the fruit. All we do is to coax them from the fruit–we really do not create….mother nature does that, we simply bring out the majesty that is wine! We also wanted to be a part of the movement to generate appreciation for the quality and complexity of wines produced right here in Pennsylvania. Our claim to fame as the first winery in Phoenixville is providing a wine tasting experience that is informative, delicious, and most of all, fun (note our tagline—We Crush Innocent Grapes to Make You Wine!)!
3.) Favorite experience in owning a business in Phoenixville
There is only one answer to this question–our connection to the music scene in Phoenixville. For this we owe a debt of gratitude to two extremely talented local musicians, Chris & Kellina Holt, who introduced us to the musicians who provide entertainment at our tasting room every Saturday night. The depth of amazing local musical talent not only drives guests to our tasting room, but it enhances their overall experience. We are delighted to be connected to this group of devoted musicians who are at the core of supporting the continuing success of this town.
4.) Biggest surprise in owning a business?
We are constantly delighted by the partnerships we have formed with other local businesses that have helped all of us to thrive and be successful, while bringing fun and unique experiences to our guests. We have hosted “Wine vs. Beer” competition dinners with Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, wine & chocolate pairings with Bridge Street Chocolates, and food & wine pairings with Marly’s and Thai L’ Elephant restaurants. As part of an innovative effort to co-market some of what Phoenixville has to offer consumers, we partnered with many of the alcohol producers in town and hosted several ‘Phlight of the Phoenix’ events, which provided an outrageously fun tasting experience for our guests.
5.) What do you love about being an entrepreneur?
The best part of being an entrepreneur is the unexpected connections with people everyday. You never know who will walk through the door, and every guest brings their own story…some become amazing customers, others end up being your friends, some become business partners…and they all share the passion for wine that got us here in the first place!
