ABOUT THE EVENT
Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “A Witch in Time: The European Witch Craze”, on Monday, October 28 at 7:00 PM. Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries was a world of wonders–the scientific causes for weather, accidents, and illness were unknown. Instead, catastrophes were attributed to the work of Satan and his minions, the witches. Thousands of accusations, trials, and executions for witchcraft swept over the continent. The world of wonders became a nightmare for many. Presenter Jaan Troltenier portrays a Scottish woman accused of being one of a circle of witches who tried to bring about the death of a king in 1589. She will discuss the European witch craze of 1560-1660: the factors that led to it, the accused, the accusers, and why women were the primary victims of the witch hunts. The program is suitable for ages 13+.
A well-respected former Latin instructor, Jaan Troltenier has honed her interactive presentation technique by spending over fifteen years as an art history docent, working with all ages from preschool to adult. She regularly appears at lifelong learning institutes at Immaculata and at Widener Universities, retirement communities, local schools and libraries, as well as at regional Civil War and Revolutionary War roundtables. An habitué of art and history museums in the US and Europe, she combines a love of research with a passion for history. She draws upon her frequent museum forays, readings in history, and love of language to create her historical and art historical interpretations, which are bolstered by painstaking research and are full of vivid stories. Interactive and informative, her lectures will spark your own interest in history. No background in history is necessary.
