Andrew Carnegie: From Steel to the Building of Libraries

Thursday, April 11, 2024 Andrew Carnegie: From Steel to the Building of Libraries

ABOUT THE EVENT

Phoenixville Public Library will host a free National Library Week virtual presentation, “Andrew Carnegie: From Steel to the Building of Libraries”, on Thursday, April 11 at 7:00 PM. Rick Feingold will be the speaker. Andrew Carnegie amassed an enormous fortune in the steel industry before becoming a major philanthropist. During the late 19th century, Carnegie perfected low-cost steel production. The Carnegie Steelworks in Homestead, PA employed men producing steel under primitive industrial working conditions. This program will highlight the 1892 strike at Homestead, which pitted the Pinkerton Detective Agency against the steelworkers, ending with 10 deaths. After Carnegie sold his steel company to J.P. Morgan, he gave all his money away by building over 2,500 libraries, many of which still exist today. Rick Feingold teaches American Business History at Bergen Community College and holds an MBA from Penn State University. This event is free and open to the public and will be held online via Zoom. Registration is required at https://ccls.libcal.com/calendar/Phoenixville/andrew-carnegie or by calling 610-933-3013, Ext. 132. Email mpinto@ccls.org for more information.
