Armed Forces Day Event, Honoring Civil War Nurse Rebecca Lane Pennypacker Price

Saturday, May 16, 2015 Armed Forces Day Event, Honoring Civil War Nurse Rebecca Lane Pennypacker Price

ABOUT THE EVENT

On Saturday, May 16th at 10AM, you are cordially invited to attend an Armed Forces Day event hosted by Senator Andy Dinniman and the Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area to honor Civil War Nurse Rebecca Lane Pennypacker Price at Morris Cemetery in Phoenixville.

Price was a member of Phoenixville’s “Union Relief Society,” where she served first as president, then secretary. The society consisted of more than a hundred volunteers, mostly women, who formed to administer to the wounded and sick, largely through the donation of supplies. During the first years of the war, Price not only helped raise supplies and funds for the troops but also personally escorted much of it to field hospitals near the front. Price turned her efforts in helping the wounded and sick at field hospitals and in July 1863, not long after the Battle of Gettysburg had ended, Price arrived at the 11th Corps field hospital where more than 1,400 men were treated. This was one of the many services she gave her devotion to in hopes to service the many wounded during the American Civil War.

The ceremony will consist of an honor guard of Federal Soldiers and Civilian women portraying those women from the Union Relief Society of Phoenixville. HSPA member Becky Manley will give a presentation at Price’s grave, as will Senator Dinniman and HSPA President Ryan Conroy.

This event is free and open to the public.
