ABOUT THE EVENT
Reservoir Park’s Community Garden will be the focus of a talk at Phoenixville Public Library on Thursday, November 30 at 6:45 PM. Mark Thompson will be the speaker in this next presentation in the Library’s partner-sponsored “Community Gardening around the Village” series. Avid gardener Mark Thompson has been an active participant in Reservoir Park’s Community Garden since moving to Phoenixville two years ago. Like many community gardens nationwide, the Reservoir Park garden contributes a share of its harvest to local community service agencies for distribution to residents facing food insecurity. Mark will discuss some of the successes achieved—including bumper crops of tomatoes and eggplants— and challenges confronted by the Reservoir Park garden—groundhogs! —in its first year in its new location within the park. He will also discuss garden projects that remain works in progress.
In his day job, Mark is an editor of Current History, a foreign affairs journal published by the University of California Press. He has also written often over the years about farming and food, and has published two books on culinary history, Vintage California Cuisine: 300 Recipes from the First Cookbooks Published in the Golden State and Vintage Vegetarian Cuisine: Early Advocates of a Vegetable Diet and Some of Their Recipes, 1699 to 1935. He gained more than two decades of experience gardening in perpetually sunny Southern California before moving to Pennsylvania, where he relishes the challenge of attempting to keep his garden going nearly year-round.
This event is free and open to the public. The program will also be livestreamed on Zoom for those unable to attend in person.
