Community Gardening around the Village: Your Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary

Monday, May 19, 2025 Community Gardening around the Village: Your Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary

ABOUT THE EVENT

Phoenixville Public Library hosts the next program in the co-sponsored “Community Gardening around the Village Series” on Monday, May 19 at 6:30 PM. Liz Alakszay will present “Your Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary”. Do you enjoy watching animals and birds? Do you know that in just the past 50 years more than 1 in 4 birds and about 50 percent of insects have disappeared, and that 3.4 percent of amphibian species are disappearing annually across North America? Much of this is attributed to habitat loss. But you can help reverse this decline! Learn how you can help our wildlife out by creating a gorgeous, low-maintenance property that will restore critical habitat. Learn what plants, shrubs, and perennials to select for both a beautiful property and an inviting home for animals, birds and insects. Develop a season spanning design that will work for you and give you time to sit back and watch your wildlife visitors!

Liz Alakszay is an avid outdoor enthusiast, organic gardener, naturalist, business analyst, dog trainer and educator who has been teaching gardening topics for over 40 years. The Penn State Extension Chester County Master Gardener Coordinator for over 6 years before retiring in 2017, and a Longwood Gardens continuing education instructor and course designer on vegetable gardening until 2019, she continues to teach horticulture at Chester County Lifelong Learning. She also conducts workshops throughout the southeast Pennsylvania region on numerous horticultural topics including growing vegetables, pollinator gardens, rain gardens and landscaping with native plants.

This event is free and open to the public. The program will also be livestreamed on Zoom for those unable to attend in person.
