Wharton Esherick (1887-1970) was a sculptor who worked primarily in wood, extending his unique forms to furniture, furnishings, utensils, interiors, and buildings. Wharton began his artistic journey as a painter in Philadelphia but left his legacy as a wood sculptor in Chester County where he would lead the studio furniture movement and earn the title, “Dean of the American Craft”. This program will introduce you to Esherick’s life, his hilltop studio and his renowned functional art.
