In January of 1973 President Nixon signed the Paris Peace Accords, ending direct U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. By March 1973 The last U.S. troops were withdrawn from Vietnam and 591 American Prisoners of war were returned. In 1975 North Vietnam overran Saigon, and South Vietnam surrendered.
