“Independent Lens” Film Screening and Discussion: “Free for All: The Public Library”

Monday, April 07, 2025 “Independent Lens” Film Screening and Discussion: “Free for All: The Public Library”

ABOUT THE EVENT

Celebrate National Library Week by joining Phoenixville Public Library and WHYY for a preview screening of a shortened version of the new “Independent Lens” documentary, Free for All: The Public Library, and learn about the making of this free civic institution, on Monday, April 7 from 6:00 to 7:45 PM at the Library. Free for All: The Public Library tells the story of the quiet revolutionaries who created a civic institution where everything is free and the doors are open to all. The public library is one of America’s most valued yet endangered institutions. Director Dawn Logsdon travels the United States, discovering historic and modern-day figures, especially women, who contributed to the library’s integral position within democracy. “Free for All: The Public Library” chronicles the evolution of the nation’s public libraries, tracing the battles over who can enter, what belongs there, and who makes these decisions, while exploring how public commons are defined and defended. The film screening will be followed by a discussion moderated by Joseph Sherwood, Executive Director of the Chester County Library System. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required at https://ccls.libcal.com/calendar/Phoenixville/free-for-all or by calling 610-933-3013 x132. Email mpinto@ccls.org for more information. Phoenixville Public Library is located at 183 Second Avenue, Phoenixville, PA.
