ABOUT THE EVENT
Phoenixville Public Library will host a free talk, “Learning Morse Code to Improve Cognitive Health”, on Friday, June 28 at 11:00 AM. Glenn Musser, Facilitator for the Library’s Phoenixville Tech Group, will be the presenter. Consider learning Morse code to improve brain function and short-term memory. Studies have shown that the mental effort required to learn and use Morse code can stimulate the brain, improving cognitive function. Samuel Morse, the inventor of Morse code, introduced a unique concept of using sound to convey information, creating a distinctive rhythm in its audible form. This rhythm, when decoded, activates our innate human sense of pattern recognition, a skill deeply embedded in our brains that aids in deciphering messages, even if they are incomplete. In a neurological sense, Morse code inhabits a very peculiar niche. It’s often likened to “reading with the ears.” Transmitting and receiving it resembles speaking more than writing. This unique aspect of Morse code makes it fascinating and beneficial for cognitive health. This presentation will explore the benefits to mental well-being and introduce you to the tools and resources necessary for learning this unique communication skill. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required at https://ccls.libcal.com/calendar/Phoenixville/morse-code or by calling 610-933-3013 x132. The program will also be livestreamed on Google Meet at https://meet.google.com/ums-fctx-byo for those unable to attend in person. Email mpinto@ccls.org for more information.
