Making Sense of Contemporary Art

Thursday, October 03, 2019 Making Sense of Contemporary Art

ABOUT THE EVENT

Phoenixville Public Library will host a free lecture, “Making Sense of Contemporary Art”, on Thursday, October 3 at 7:00 PM. Local artist and teacher Ellen O. Nelson will be the speaker. Have you ever struggled with trying to make sense of contemporary art? If so, you are not alone, and this lecture is for you. Using a chronological approach, Ellen will present a historical overview of art as it progresses from modern to our contemporary time period. Giving a context and precedence for contemporary art helps to increase our understanding and appreciation for these sometimes-confounding works of art. Using various themes such as: appropriation, integration of time and text, and social injustice, Ellen will present various works of art to help illuminate some of the questions and concerns explored by contemporary artists.

Ellen O. Nelson is a Senior Master of the Arts at The Hill School in Pottstown and Coordinator of the Boyer Gallery. Nelson has been a member of the arts department since 1987. She has served as chair of the department and has taught multiple levels of studio art and art history. Nelson holds a Master of Arts in Arts Education from the New Hampshire Institute of Art. She is a respected juror for various art groups including the Philadelphia Water Color Society and the Chester County Art Association. She has been a guest lecturer at the Reading Museum and Albright College. She is a prolific, award-winning artist in various mediums and exhibits regularly with the Perkiomen Valley Art Center and the Pottstown Area Artists Guild. Primarily a printmaker, Nelson has recently been exploring the theme of embodiment by creating garments from foraged natural materials.
