ABOUT THE EVENT
Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “New Jersey’s Pine Barrens: A Devil of a Place!”, on Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 PM. Naturalist, environmental educator, and writer Mike Weilbacher will be the presenter. South Jersey’s Pine Barrens, a million-acre preserve of seemingly endless pine trees and cedar swamps, is filled with secrets and mysteries: cranberry bogs home to insect-eating plants, dwarf pine forests no taller than you, rare and endangered orchids, ghost towns that vanished long ago, and of course the Jersey Devil, the state’s official demon. In an illustrated lecture mixing equal parts history and ecology, writer-naturalist Mike Weilbacher shares this magical region with you, including its preservation and threats to this unique place.
Mike Weilbacher travels the region offering walks and talks on everything from climate change in our region to the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. He’s also the author of Wild Philly: Explore the Amazing Nature In and Around Philadelphia, a book that contains 25 walks in the Delaware Valley plus lots of additional information on local nature. He’ll be selling and signing books after the lecture. This is his third time lecturing at the Phoenixville Library, having previously spoken on Wild Philly and climate change.
This event is free and open to the public. The program will also be livestreamed on Zoom for those unable to attend in person.
