ABOUT THE EVENT
Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “Opera 101: From A to Bohème”, on Monday, October 14 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Suzanne Martinucci, a New York based writer and lecturer on opera, will be the speaker. What’s so great about opera? It’s been famously described, not altogether inaccurately, as “an exotic and irrational entertainment.” Those who love opera can be fanatical about it. Others who have not caught “the bug” can be put off by the outsized plots and productions, the language barrier, and the length of the performances – to say nothing of the ticket prices! Suzanne will present a capsule-sized introduction to this great art form – covering some of its history, great artists, and why its fans love it so – culminating in the viewing of a single act from Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème. If you’ve been tempted to give opera a try but have been unsure of how to get started, this is the program for you! Suzanne Martinucci has always loved classical music and caught the opera bug in her teens. Later, Suzanne spent 20 years working at the Metropolitan Opera, where she is now a regular panelist on the Opera Quiz during the Met’s Saturday afternoon live radio broadcasts.
