ABOUT THE EVENT
The Phoenix Book Club will discuss Amor Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow on Monday, June 4 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Phoenixville Public Library. In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a hotel across from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery. Through humor, a glittering cast of characters, and beautifully rendered scenery, Towles shows us how the count endeavors to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.
