ABOUT THE EVENT

The next meeting of the Phoenix Book Club will be Monday, April 3 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. The group will meet to discuss A Man and His Garden: The Story of Pierre S. du Pont’s Development of Longwood Gardens by George E. Thompson, Sr. and Richard G. Taylor. Longwood Gardens has been acclaimed as one of the world’s outstanding horticultural exhibitions. It attracts more than a million visitors a year to view not only breathtaking conservatory displays but also outdoor gardens and flower beds, arboreta, an open-air theater and spectacular colored fountains.

For more than a year George Thompson collected information from the members of the Longwood Gardens staff who were closely associated with Mr. du Pont in the creation of the gardens. He drew upon his own personal service with Mr. du Pont, as well as historical and biographical material in the P. S. du Pont files of the Eleutherian Mills Historical Library. Passes to Longwood Gardens (each for up to 4 people) will be raffled off for free at this meeting. A copy of the book may be reserved at the Library or at www.ccls.org. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call 610-933-3013 x132 or e-mail mpinto@ccls.org
