Phoenix Book Club: “Horse”

Monday, December 11, 2023 Phoenix Book Club: “Horse”

ABOUT THE EVENT

The Phoenix Book Club, Phoenixville Public Library’s virtual book discussion group for adults of all ages, will meet on Zoom Monday, December 11 at 7:00 PM. The group will discuss Horse, the award-winning, bestselling novel by Geraldine Brooks. Kentucky, 1850. Jarrett, an enslaved groom, and a bay foal forge a bond that carries the horse to record-setting victories across the South. As the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who’s made his name painting the racehorse takes up arms for the Union–and reunites with the horse and his groom. NYC 1954–gallery owner Martha Jackson, becomes obsessed with a 19th century equestrian painting of mysterious provenance. Washington, D.C., 2019–Jess, Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, Nigerian-American art historian, are drawn together through their shared interest in the horse. Based on the true story of Lexington, America’s greatest stud sire, Brooks gives us a multilayered reckoning with the legacy of enslavement and racism in America.
