Phoenixville Public Library will host a screening and discussion of a short documentary film, Rediscovering Pennsylvania’s History Makers: Lucretia Mott, on Monday, March 13 at 6:45 PM. The discussion will be led by David Atkinson of the Susquehanna Valley Center for Public Policy.
When she passed away, Lucretia Mott was said to be the most well-known woman in America. Despite her intrepid advocacy for abolition and women’s rights, she has largely faded from public recognition over generations. Small in stature, she was quite large in courage and fortitude, going places and breaking traditions that barred the voice and even the presence of a woman. Learning about and understanding Lucretia Mott is key to unlocking pivotal events and driving causes in Pennsylvania history, which still resonate today.
David Atkinson spent 35 years working in the state Senate, most of that time for Senator Robert C. Jubelirer. He has a B.A. and M.S. from Shippensburg University. Always a history nerd/buff, doing documentaries is something he discovered to entertain himself in semi-retirement. He is a member of various museums and spends time each year touring battlefields and historical sites.
