A rethinking of August Strindberg’s The Stronger.

Two women run into each other in a restaurant on Christmas Eve. One is married and has been out shopping for presents for her family, the other is unmarried and is sitting alone in the restaurant reading magazines and drinking. In Strindberg’s original, the only speaking part belongs to one of the women. In this adaptation by Christine Emmert, each character, including the waiter, gets a voice. The audience is expected to take sides, maybe many sides as the story unfolds. Strindberg’s 1889 play has been made into an opera, and there have been numerous film and television adaptations of the work.

Katherine Mallon-Day is a double delight to the theater world as both a classically trained singer and an actress. She holds degrees from Temple University. In addition to her performing, she teaches on the faculty of Settlement Music School in Philadelphia and has her own studio for vocal students on the Main Line. She has sung with the Philadelphia Opera Company as well as alto soloist at Saint Peter’s Church in the Great Valley in Malvern, and the Philadelphia Singers Chorale. Her stage presence has been seen in the Media Theater , Gretna Playhouse, People’s Light and Theater, and Arden Theater in this area. She has developed a one-woman show, SONGS FROM MY GRANDMOTHER’S MUSIC CABINET, which she has taken on tour throughout the area. She lives in Paoli with her husband and two crazy Jack Russell Terriers, Willow and Merlin.

Christine Emmert is an actress, writer, director, and educator. Her plays have been performed throughout the United States, in Canada and the UK. As Outreach Director for Hopewell Furnace National Park she has written and toured in FROM OUT THE FIERY FURNACE for eight years. She has also appeared in that same play in Williamsburg VA as part of Historical Writers of America. In addition, she has performed at the Eisenberg Camps in works about Jewish life and culture. She recently was a finalist in the Jane Goodall Foundation play competition for works about endangered species. Christine has three books out on Amazon. Her blog is accessible at christineemmert.wordpress.com. She lives in Valley Forge with her husband, Richard, and their inspirational dog and cat.

Richard Emmert is a visual artist in addition to his talents on the stage where he has acted, directed, and designed sets. He has won prizes in the past for his sculpture and is currently busy with paintings. He holds a degree in Anthropology from Temple University. His artwork is in private collections all over the world. In the acting world he just finished playing Fritz in THE JEWISH WIFE in the Berkshires. He is an important voice in all of Wild Plum’s Productions, both as an actor and designer.
