ABOUT THE EVENT
Phoenixville Public Library will host a fun and educational hands-on workshop on starting plants from seed, “Super Seed Starting!”, on Tuesday, April 2 at 7:00 PM. Elizabeth Alakszay, an instructor for Longwood Gardens, will lead the workshop, which is being held in conjunction with Longwood’s Community Read program. In this hands-on workshop, Liz will discuss and demonstrate the techniques that will ensure your success in starting plants from seed. After a brief overview of the amazing structure of seeds, she will take an in depth look at what is involved in starting a plant from a seed. Choosing seeds, soil, containers, lighting, watering, temperature, fertilizing, and transplanting your seedling will be covered. The art of seed saving at the end of the growing season will also be reviewed. Each participant will plant flower seeds to take home for their garden. Cost for the workshop is $10.00 per person, payable at the door.
Liz Alakszay is an instructor for Longwood Gardens and a horticultural instructor for the Chester County Night School. She retired as Chester County Master Gardener Coordinator in 2017, after running the program for 6 years. She is a featured lecturer at many gardening venues throughout the region. When she is not teaching or starting over 600 plants from seed, you can find her and her two dogs and cat in her certified pollinator and natural wildlife habitat garden.
This event is a celebration of Longwood Gardens’ Community Read focus on the science of the plant world and where it all started… seeds. Attendees will be entered into a free raffle drawing for vouchers for free admission to Longwood Gardens, to be awarded at the conclusion of the program.
