ABOUT THE EVENT

Phoenixville Public Library will host a free online presentation, “The Faces of Northwest Europe, 1944”, on Monday, June 8 at 7:00 PM. Dr. Brooke Blades will be the speaker for this slide-illustrated presentation. The Allied landings in Normandy on 6 June 1944 represented the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany. Three months of hard and costly fighting in the Norman hedgerows and amid destroyed towns lay ahead. By 1 September Paris was liberated and the Allied armies were rushing northward into Belgium and westward through France toward Germany. Their advance was slowed by several factors, including supply difficulties and stiffened enemy resistance. By December the German border had been reached at only a few locations. On 16 December a counter-offensive in the Ardennes would ensure a grim Christmas season for soldiers and civilians.

Dr. Brooke Blades is an archaeologist and historian who resides with his family in Chester County. He has written a trilogy of books on the experience of the American Army in north-west Europe, based on photographs and original documents mostly from the National Archives, veteran interviews and selected historical works.

This event is free and open to the public, and will take place online via Zoom. Registration is required on the Adult Events Calendar at www.phoenixvillelibrary.org to receive an invitation to this online event, which will be e-mailed out a few days prior to the event.
