ABOUT THE EVENT

Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “The Way Books are Bound: The Evolution of the Written Word”, on Thursday, December 5 at 7:00 PM. Professional bookbinder Ramon Townsend will be the presenter. Ramon will take you on a journey from Mesopotamian cuneiform through the Industrial Revolution to show the history of book production. He’ll also bring some of the tools and equipment used in traditional book production.

In the late 1970’s Ramon Townsend was a student at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. He applied for a job at Colonial Williamsburg and was hired to work in the Print Shop and Bookbindery. He studied under master and journeyman craftsmen all phases of traditional book publication, from paper making to gold tooled leather bound books. After several years he left the shop but continued making and repairing books for relatives and friends. In 2012 he started Colonial Bindery with his daughter, Danielle. Today there are four of them. They repair books and conduct workshops in bookbinding, marbling, book repair and gold tooling.

This event is free and open to the public. Reservations are required on the Adult Events Calendar at www.phoenixvillelibrary.org or by calling 610-933-3013 x132. Phoenixville Public Library is located at 183 Second Avenue, Phoenixville, PA.
