CEO of Settlement Music School Joins Tompkins VIST Bank Board of Directors

October 27, 2020

WYOMISSING, PA – Tompkins VIST Bank is pleased to welcome to its board of directors Helen Eaton, CEO of Settlement Music School of Philadelphia, one of the largest non-profit community schools of the arts in the United States.

Eaton, of Bryn Mawr, has a long and distinguished career in music education, management and fund raising and has become a driving force in expanding music education to youth and adults in the Philadelphia area.  Since she joined Settlement as CEO in 2010, she has helped increase financial aid to students to more than $2.6 million a year, and has expanded partnerships with Philadelphia-area music organizations to help students from underrepresented communities gain access to opportunities in music education. This year Eaton received the Arts Education Leadership Award by Americans for the Arts, the first leader in the Philadelphia region to do so.  In addition to her work with Settlement, she is vice chair of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.

Prior to Settlement, Eaton was president and executive director of the Chicago Children’s Choir and dean of Programs at the Merit School of Music in Chicago.  Her more than 25-year career includes many years as an active practitioner of music education, and as a frequent presenter on innovation at a legacy institution at conferences and seminars, including the Innosight CEO Summit, Executive Leaders Radio, B.PHL Innovation Fest in Philadelphia, and Villanova University. Her work at Settlement Music has been featured in articles and books published by Harvard Business Review Press.

Eaton received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree from the University of Chicago, and a degree in Viola Performance from The Juilliard School.

“Helen has an impressive history of using her talents, commitment and leadership to improve the lives of others,” said Scott Gruber, president and CEO of Tompkins VIST Bank.  “As a bank that is focused on its communities, we warmly welcome her and we know she will be an asset to our board.”
