Board Member Responsibilities
- Engage in ongoing planning activities to determine the mission, activities, goals and objectives and to evaluate the success of programs toward achieving mission
- Responsible for board operations, including the education, training and development of board members, annual evaluation of board performance, and selection of new board members as indicated
- Schedule a minimum of four board meetings per year
- Monitor attendance and participation of board members at board and committee meetings, including a process to address noncompliance
- Establish stated expectations for board members
- Maintenance and distribution of written meeting minutes reflecting the actions of the board, including reports of board committees when acting in place of the board
- Annually approve budget and assess financial performance; review percentages of resources spent on program, fundraising and administration
- Periodically review overall salary structure of the organization
- Hire Executive Director and evaluate performance annually
- Establish policies for the effective management of the organization
- Understand and promote the organization’s mission, including awareness of programs and operations
- Participate in resource development and fundraising
- Review board meeting materials prior to meetings
- Make an annual gift to the organization commensurate with ones ability
- Advocacy for and community education about the organization
BOARD MEMBER JOB DESCRIPTION
- Provides governance to the organization
- Regularly attends Board meetings and important related meetings
- Makes serious commitment to participate actively in committee work
- Volunteers for and willingly accepts assignments and completes them thoroughly and on time
- Stays informed about committee matters, prepares themselves well for meetings, and reviews and comments on minutes and reports
- Gets to know other committee members and builds a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus
- Participates in resource development and fundraising for the organization
- Represents the organization in the community by understanding and promoting the mission, being aware of programs and operations, and educating community about the organization.
