Valley Forge National Historical Park has found its new superintendent in Steve Sims, a former facility manager at Independence National Historic Park, writes Mark Abrams for CBS Philly.
A California native, the 43-year-old graduated from West Point and spent six years serving in the Army before joining the park service.
In his new position, Sims is responsible for the historic, 3,500-acre Valley Forge property and managing its 55 permanent employees and 20 seasonal workers.
“Having this huge responsibility is an honor,” said Sims. “It means a lot to me that somebody’s entrusted me to take care and steward this wonderful resource and preserve the history and all that it represents.”
He’s also excited by all the support the park is getting from the community, including a recent $50,000 donation by the Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board.
He already has plans for the additional funding, which include financing improvements at the visitor center and maintenance on Sullivan’s Bridge and a pedestrian walkway over the Schuylkill River. Some of the money will be also be allocated to a new kiosk to help visitors find their way around the park.
