WYOMISSING, PA – A different kind of pie was the focus of the second annual Tompkins VIST Bank fundraising event for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and it succeeded in raising $10,000 for the MDA. The funds will be used to send children with neuromuscular disease to a summer camp in June.
At last year’s Tompkins VIST/MDA fundraiser, employees paid for the opportunity to throw a dessert pie at a bank executive. The event raised a total of $6,000. For the Cow Pie Bingo, held last week at Classic Harley-Davidson in Leesport, the bank raised more than $7,000 and received a matching gift of $3,000 from the Jeremy Carroll foundation, bringing the total to $10,000.
Tompkins VIST Bank sold $20 squares to its employees for a chance to claim the spot where the cow would lay a pie. More than 100 employees, their families, and MDA supporters watched as two steer calves wandered around a grassy pen. It took only a few minutes for one of the calves to pick his spot. The calves belong to Jonathon Werley, 11, who is raising them for a 4H Dairy project. Jonathon is the son of Travis Werley, head of the bank’s agribusiness group and himself a farmer.
“This was a fun way to support this very worthwhile cause,” said Scott Gruber, president and CEO of Tompkins VIST Bank. “I’m proud that our employees responded so enthusiastically, and we are very appreciative of the generous donation from the Jeremy Carroll foundation.”
“Thanks to generous supporters such as Tompkins VIST Bank, Americans affected by muscle diseases are living longer and finding strength in the progress that MDA-funded researchers are making in finding treatments and cures. Together we are progress,” said Katrina Schreefer, executive director of the MDA, based in Allentown.
